AIDS art wins national award

Fulton County's "Art for AIDS" annual fundraising auction has won a prestigious 2002 Acts of Caring Award from the National Association of Counties.

A project of the Fulton County Human Services Department in conjunction with AID Atlanta, "Art for AIDS" auctions artwork to raise funds to help homeless persons with AIDS. County officials will receive the award at a NACo ceremony April 11 in Washington, DC.

This year's auction, held recently in the Fulton County Government Center, raised more than $36,000. The art is created and donated by clients at Jefferson Place Transitional House, a men's emergency shelter operated by the Human Services Department, and by local professional artists and galleries.

Proceeds benefit AID Atlanta's Street Home Program, which works with Mercy Mobile Health Care and Project Open Hand to help provide housing, meals, substance abuse counseling, employment and literacy training, and other services to homeless persons with AIDS.

NACo, the only national organization that represents county governments in the U.S., is a national advocate for counties, serving as a liaison with other levels of government and working to improve public understanding of counties.
