The time has come again for Fayette County to dredge Lake Peachtree, removing from it an estimated 20,000 cubic yards of sediment.

The action is required as part of the county's contract with Peachtree City to use Lake Peachtree as a reservoir. County officials are waiting on input from Peachtree City on the project; after that it will be 60 to 90 days before a contractor can begin the dredging, according to county consulting engineer Jim Mallett.

Mallett estimated the project will take about three months to complete, "depending on the weather."

The county has not determined which type of dredging technique to use yet. But City Engineer Troy Besseche said the city would prefer the least impact on the lake.

Using mechanical equipment for the dredging would require the lake's level to be dropped, which is less preferable to traditional dredging which wouldn't require such a drastic measure, Besseche said.

"We're still working with the county on what method they're going to use to remove sediment from the lake," Besseche said.

County officials want to use Drake Field as a staging area for materials and equipment during the dredging project. The city is asking the county to pave a separate road to Drake Field from a cut-through on Ga. Highway 54 so the trucks and heavy equipment don't have to drive through the main parking area for City Hall and the library, Besseche said.

Besseche pointed out that the City Hall/library parking lot is heavily used by pedestrians.
