21st Century Coweta picks up seat on economic board

Another chapter in the ongoing dispute between 21st Century Coweta and the Coweta County Commission unfolded during Tuesday's commission meeting.

When the dust had settled, the County Commission had agreed to appoint 21st Century director Scott Frederick to the county's Economic Development Advisory Committee.

The commission originally considered appointing two members from the economic development group to the board, but the vote did not garner the necessary three votes.

Commission chairman Jim McGuffey said he was in favor of the two groups working together, but said he wasn't in favor of changing the bylaws to allow two new members.

Commissioner Robert Wood pointed out that Chamber director Greg Wright was on 21st Century's board and the county's advisory group. If two more 21st Century members were added, the group would be close to having a majority of 21st Century Coweta members.

The latest dispute is part of an ongoing battle between the county and the economic development group.

Last year, the split grew so big between the county and 21st Century that county officials set aside $275,000 to start their own development agency.

But, in a conciliatory nod towards shoring up relations, Wood made a motion to add Frederick to the committee. The committee will now feature 10 members and report to the county on efforts of luring more economic development to the county.
