"United We Walk In Power" is the 2002 slogan for the 13th annual Fayette Youth Protection Homes Power Parade. The week of April 1519 will find all elementary school children taking home envelopes to collect donations to benefit the Friday and Johnson homes for abused and neglected children.

April highlights Child Abuse Prevention Month, which was first observed in 1983. Schools and churches use the time to focus on positive parenting and the problem of child abuse in this country.

Each year the charity holds a design contest among the county high schools for artwork that reflects the theme of the event. This year's winner is Melissa Flanagan, a 16 year-old junior at Fayette County High School. A student of art teacher Melanie Mickleboro, she aspires to a legal career but says she uses art and writing to relax. Her logo will appear in red, white and blue format on t-shirts, posters, pledge envelopes and all Power Parade correspondence.

"We have scores of volunteers who help and great business partners who contribute cash and prizes for the schools who have the highest participation in the Power Parade," said Jane Gough, development coordinator for Fayette Youth Protection Homes. "This is truly a community-wide effort. Learning and working together, we can stop the cycle of abuse."
