BOE eyes school calendar decision By MONROE ROARK
The Fayette County Board of Education will likely decide on the 2003-04 school calendar next week. A special called meeting has been scheduled for Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the school system's headquarters in Fayetteville. Aside from the calendar, personnel changes make up the only other item on the agenda. A work session is also planned with an update of the upcoming year's budget. Three proposed calendars have been discussed by the board and have been posted on the school system's Web site for several weeks. There has been considerable discussion of a balanced calendar, with an earlier start and a couple of extra five-day breaks throughout the year. According to published reports, more than 2 million students in the United States use some form of balanced calendar, including several in Georgia. The Henry County school system will do so beginning this fall. At the March meeting, Superintendent John DeCotis suggested that the public had not had enough time to view all three proposals, so a vote was tabled until this month. Anyone seeking more information can still fax board members at 770-460-8191 or check the school system's Web site at www.fcboe.org.
