PTC's new online map has search engine for streets

With Peachtree City's new online city map, finding a street is as easy as searching the Internet.

The map, which is in Adobe Acrobat format, allows users to search for a particular street or subdivision. Once that street or subdivision name is found, the map jumps to that location in the city, highlighting the name on the map.

Instructions for using the program are posted along with the link to the map on the city's Web site, www.peachtree-city.org, by clicking the "About PTC" link on the left side.

Matt Robinson, the city's technical support manager, said the updated map was requested by a number of residents who complained about incomplete or incorrect information on maps provided by other entities. The city is also printing its own "analog" maps (in paper) which will be available in the near future, Robinson said.

Kelly Clute, the city's Geographic Information Systems technician, traveled the city's cart paths for over three months to make sure the information was as accurate as possible. But in case there are any problems, Robinson wants comments from map users so glitches can be straightened out. He may be e-mailed at mrobinson@peachtree-city.org.

The web site cautions users not to attempt to print out the map because of its large size.

In the next year or so, the city plans to buy software allowing online users to plot directions from one point in the city to another, Robinson said. Other future plans include linking data such as tax information, crime statistics and other records to areas on the map, but those advancements are slated to be added on in a year or so, he added.

The city has 80 miles of cart paths that are used by walkers, bikers, joggers, skaters and others to get around town without having to hit the road system.
