PTC planning commission approves landscape plan for Wal-Mart, Home Depot

Somewhat satisfied that developers have a solid plan to screen the under-construction Wal-Mart Supercenter from view of motorists on Ga. Highway 74, the Peachtree City Planning Commission has approved the landscape plan for that property and the adjacent Home Depot.

Company officials plan for construction to wrap up in August or September.

Bill Lincicome, who oversees the project for High Grove Partners, said 65 Azalea Cypress trees/shrubs will be added to a berm that has been built between six and eight feet tall.

That adds for a coverage area between 16 and 17 feet, Lincicome said. He added that 230 existing pine trees in the area are also staying for screening purposes.

"It appears to do a good job of disguising the massiveness of the two structures," said commission chairman Wes Saunders.

A condition on the approval allows city staff to require additional plant material for the area if necessary. The commission amended that condition to reflect that the developer must bear the cost of such plant material.

"We really feel this will get 90 to 95 percent of the building so you won't see it," Lincicome said. "And with this plant in a year I'm certain you won't see any of it."

Although that area will not be irrigated, the rest of the plant material on the site will be served by a watering system, Lincicome said.

The plan includes 1,160 canopy trees and 1,160 understory trees for the 38-acre site which will have over 1 million sq. ft. of impervious surface.

City Planner David Rast said the companies and builders involved have been very cooperative with city staff on landscaping issues.

The city allowed the landscaping to be installed before the plan was approved by the commission so the developer could take advantage of good weather, city officials have said.

The plan was discussed by the commission at a previous workshop.

In other business, the commission:

Tabled a request for a commercial rezoning for property located at the former entrance to the Wynnmeade subdivision on Ga. Highway 54 West. The matter has been tabled for several consecutive meetings at the developer's request.

Approved a conceptual site plan for Compressed Air Products, which will be in The Park industrial subdivision at the intersection of Gardner Park and Parkade Court. The 20,000 sq. ft. building will also have room for two additional tenants.

Approved a conceptual site plan for Southern Federal Credit Union, which will be at the intersection of Commerce Drive and Aberdeen Parkway. The 10,850 sq. ft. building will have a public meeting room upstairs and a picnic pavilion outside for public use.
