County moving forward with GRTA projects By JOHN
THOMPSON After agreeing to a deal in principle with the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority for express buses, Coweta County is not wasting any time in trying to improve some dangerous intersections. In exchange for paying $850,000 to help run the bus system for three years, the county receives $10.4 million to improve dangerous intersections and arterial roads. The current plans for the bus system calls for eight round trips a day from Coweta County to Hartsfield. It could be operating by the summer of 2003. County administrator Theron Gay said the county has already moved forward with engineering for some of the more pressing intersections. While the county does not know when the funds will start trickling in from GRTA, Gay said the county intends money approved in a recent SPLOST election and then get reimbursed from the transportation agency. Gay said the county's biggest need is for improving the conditions along Lower Fayetteville Road, but also said it is working on the engineering for several intersections, including: ·Old Carrollton Highway and Ga. Highway 16. ·Hwy.16 and Poplar Road. ·Macedonia Road and Hwy.16. ·Marion Beavers Road and Ga. Highway 154. ·Hwy.154 and Hwy.16. ·Gordon Road and Ga. Highway 54. ·Wallace Grey Road and Belt Road.
