PTC plans to offer online payment system for traffic tickets, electronic access to auto accident reports

In the future, Peachtree City residents may be able to hop online to pay their traffic tickets and get a copy of an auto accident report from the Police Department.

Brad Williams, the city's systems administrator, said those are several features that could be added to the city's Web site. Access to the auto accident reports could be secured by requiring a password such as the driver's name and license number, he said.

Police Chief James Murray said a lot of visitors to the Police Department come to request copies of auto accident reports.

Currently, residents can log on to www.peachtree-city.org for a number of services, including:

Registering and paying for recreation classes and activities.

Registering new golf carts.

Requesting permits for outdoor burning, tree removal inspections and other services.

A third-party firm handles the credit card payments for the Recreation Department, but the city would have to take that task on to allow traffic fines to be paid over the Internet, said Finance Director Paul Salvatore.

Murray noted that the department's Web site has been updated recently, allowing interested persons to apply for department jobs online. He estimated that 70 percent of the applications the department receives are from the web site.

Murray also said he did not oppose making the accident reports available over the Internet.

"They are a public record," he noted.
