Flashing badge after accident nets arrest of Griffin man

A Griffin man has been arrested by Fayetteville police for impersonating a police officer.

According to warrants, James Anthony Cook, 41, falsely identified himself at an auto accident at the intersection of Ga. highways 85 and 314. Court documents indicate he verbally identified himself as a police officer, and he flashed a badge from the Spalding County Sheriff's Office.

But Cook was later found to have been terminated from his position at Spalding County June 6 of last year, according to a Fayetteville Police report, citing Spalding County records and the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, which regulates law enforcement officers in the state of Georgia.

Magistrate Judge Robert Ruppenthal set Cook's bond at $5,000.
