Griffin, Britt win 2002 'Teen of Excellence' pageant

Sixteen-year-old Terresa Griffin of Union City was crowned queen and 14-year-old Kamesha Britt of College Park was crowned princess of the second annual "Miss Georgia Teen of Excellence Pageant."

They won over 17 other contestants in the competition, presented recently by the Housing Authority of Fulton County and Community Opportunity Centers, Inc.

Held at the Robert Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech, the pageant capped a year-long program designed to prevent teen pregnancy and drug abuse, and break the cycle of poverty in young female residents of public and Section 8 assisted housing in unincorporated Fulton County.

Griffin, who received a $2,500 college scholarship and other prizes, also won category awards for most talented and most graceful.

The Creekside High School tenth-grader likes to study world history, and wants to be a psychiatrist.

Marqueetah Hicks, Westlake High School, and Candace Willis, North Springs High School, were first and second runnersup.

Britt, a Camp Creek Middle School seventh-grader, loves math and wants to be a doctor or lawyer. Sherderia Presley and Demiquea Scott, also Camp Creek students, were first and second runnersup.

Other category winners were: Willis ; most congenial; Kartavia Farley, Camp Creek, most improved; Hicks, most spirited, most physically fit, best interview, and leadership award; and Jasmine Butler, Camp Creek, Executive Director's Award.

"I congratulate these young ladies for participating in this program, which helps them realize their potential for success," said District 7 Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards, who represents South Fulton.
