PTC may require training for planning commissioners

Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown hopes to strengthen the city's Planning Commission through training requirements.

Because their decisions are so crucial, Brown says it's time to require training for all new planning commissioners while enhancing the experience of current planning commissioners.

Specifically, Brown wants the city to require commissioners to take a planning course taught by the Atlanta Regional Commission. Brown noted that he has taken the course and he felt the information is very beneficial.

"On-the-job training for planning commissioners is not the way to go," Brown said.

But Councilwoman Annie McMenamin wondered if the course should be taught by Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services.

Brown urged council not to "limit" the training to just Williams' abilities. Williams suggested that if a course was held locally, other interested citizens could attend.

Councilman Murray Weed said he felt such a course needed to cover legal decisions related to zoning and other development matters.

Brown originally proposed requiring applicants to the Planning Commission to take the class. But council agreed it would be cheaper instead to train those selected to the commission and perhaps facilitate that by selecting candidates earlier than usual.
