Former Barnes Advisor Focuses on the Economy in Campaign for General Assembly Chuck Meadows, who for over two years was deputy policy director for Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, kicked off his campaign for state Senate District 34 last week. Meadows became the first to announce his candidacy for the seat currently held by Greg Hecht, D-Jonesboro, who is running for Congress. The new 34th District includes portions of both Clayton and Fayette counties. Citing his education and experience in economics and economic development, Meadows pitches himself as one who could help usher in the economic recovery that is anxiously awaited by many. Meadows studied at Morehouse College, Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs, and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, he said. His professional accomplishments include the design of Georgia's Corporate Headquarters Job Tax Credit, the state's sales tax incentive for high technology businesses, and the development of the governor's $60 million a year economic development engine, the OneGeorgia Authority. Both Meadows and the governor claim that these programs have helped attract jobs to the state. Meadows also led the team that developed Georgia's college savings plan that allows parents to save money for their children's college education in a tax-exempt account. The College Park native holds that the success of these and other programs show the link between economic prosperity and policy areas such as education, transportation and health care. "Sound economic policy must reach far beyond the stock market and the federal interest rate," Meadows said in his campaign announcement speech to a crowd of windblown supporters just after lunchtime on a chilly Tuesday. "It must touch the schools our children attend, the highways we drive, the businesses we own and work for, and the health facilities that tend to our sick and elderly." Meadows' series of campaign kickoff events included a reception attended by private business and political staff, and the launch of the official campaign Web site, www.chuckmeadows.com.
