2002 school teachers of the year announced

Teachers of the year for each of Coweta County's 26 public schools have been elected by their fellow faculty members.

They will participate in the Coweta Teacher of the Year Program May 13, which the Board of Education presents annually with the Newnan Pilot Club.

The teachers of the year from each school are: Bobbi Deling, second grade, Arbor Springs; Bob Lutz, sixth grade, Arnall Middle; Kelly Smith, fourth grade, Arnco-Sargent; Elizabeth Terrell, first grade, Atkinson; Amy Vickery, third grade, grade chairman, Canongate; Lynne Dodds, business education, Central Educational Center; Anne Storey, resource, East Coweta Middle; Caroline Parsell, special education, East Coweta High.

Other TOTYs are Gloria Smoot, fifth grade, Eastside; Debbie Stripling fourth grade, Elm Street; Josette Carlisle, Kindergarten, Jefferson Parkway; Jenny Gloer, gifted science, Madras Middle; Louise Morrison pre-Kindergarten, Maggie Brown; Tracy Myatt, third grade, Moreland; Kristal Petersen second grade, Newnan Crossing; Dale Sizemore art, Newnan High; Shirley Porter special education, Northgate High; Paula B. Baker fifth grade, Northside.

Other TOTYs are Susan Heard, eighth grade language arts, O.P. Evans Middle; Jim Schuyler, third grade, Poplar Road; Ruth Cooper, computer lab, Ruth Hill; Bill Wilbert, eighth grade Georgia history, Smokey Road Middle; Linda Grabill, first grade, Thomas Crossroads; Joy Knight, resource, Western; Montie Strickland, third grade, White Oak; Polly Craft, high school English and literature, Winston Dowdell Academy.

Coweta's 2001 TOTY, Lorraine Johnson, is currently a semi-finalist for Georgia TOTY. She is one of 12 Georgia semi-finalists from Coweta since 1986, including two, Nancy Royal and Jamie Lipscomb, who went on to be selected as Georgia Teacher of the Year.

Teachers of the Year are selected for the quality of their teaching, professional development, teaching philosophy and methods, community involvement and contributions to education. From the local nominees will come three finalists, one of whom will be chosen Coweta Teacher of the Year and nominee for Georgia Teacher of the Year.
