Alumni to raise money for Bent Tree cast and foundation

The Clayton State Alumni Association plans to raise $50,000 as part of the university's 2001/2002 annual fund drive to purchase the previously made cast of the "Bent Tree" and help support the university's missions and goals through the Clayton College & State University Foundation.

Thomas George, president of the association, together with the Alumni Board, agreed to set the goal of $50,000.

Once the money is raised and the fiberglass cast of the tree has been purchased, the replica of the campus-renowned loblolly pine affectionately and appropriately titled "The Bent Tree" will be placed either in the courtyard outside the University Center (currently under construction) or will possibly be positioned inside the building.

"The wood from the actual Bent Tree will be used as mementos for generous donors," said Reda Rowell, director of development and alumni relations at Clayton State. The Alumni Association plans to fashion the lumber into, among other things, small replicas of the inverted question mark-shaped tree.

Other proceeds from the Alumni Association fund-raising will go toward the foundation to better education at Clayton State.

Approximately 10 percent of CCSU's student body are Fayette County residents.
