PTC Council signs off on update to land use plan By JOHN
MUNFORD
Peachtree City's new update to its land use plan is now officially on the books. The plan, which mostly included housekeeping changes, was approved unanimously by the City Council at its regular meeting Thursday night. This update included only 78 recommended changes while the previous update comprised of approximately 500 changes, noted Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. Of the recommended changes, 23 were to reclassify subdivisions from multi-family use to single family use because that's how they were developed, Williams said. Another 15 changes reclassified city-owned recreation areas from open space to recreation use. That's because open space is for land that is typically not used for a specific purpose, Williams said. The plan also includes a change for several light industrial parcels on Clover Reach. Williams said those areas, which includes several restaurants, a skating rink, a day care center and an office park, should be considered for commercial use "as an extension of The Avenue." Williams explained that those parcels would have to be rezoned commercially to be developed that way, which gives the city an amount of control over how the projects will turn out. Some other parcels such as churches had land use changes from residential to community service. That will help keep those sites from being redeveloped as apartments in the future, Williams noted. The land use plan is used as a guide to future development in the city. It does not change zoning classifications for various properties, however. The changes to the plan were recommended by city staff and approved by the planning commission.
