Commissioner joins district board
Fulton County Commission Vice Chairman Karen Elaine Webster has been appointed to the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District Board for a four-year term. Atlanta City Council President Cathy Woolard appointed Webster to the nine-member board. ADID is a special-benefit district governed by the people who tax themselves to finance improvements, in this case property owners in a 200-block area of downtown Atlanta. Established in 1996, ADID has fielded the Ambassador Force, a 70-person group dedicated to making downtown Atlanta safer, cleaner and more hospitable. The Clean Team was added in 2000 to intensify cleaning of the district's sidewalks and to remove graffiti. As the District 2, at-large commissioner, Webster won her seat in November 1998, becoming the first female to hold a countywide position on the Fulton County Commission. A native Atlantan, Webster is senior corporate vice president at Beers Skanska Inc., the largest commercial contractor in the Southeast.
