Extension granted for electric vehicles on PTC path system By JOHN
MUNFORD Low speed electric vehicles can still be used on Peachtree City's path system despite the fact that the state is not issuing auto tags for them as originally planned. Several bills pending in the state legislature attempt to address the tag issue, but since it is not resolved yet the Peachtree City Council has decided to extend the use of low speed vehicles on the paths for another 30 days. The tags were one of the reasons Police Chief James Murray supported allowing low speed vehicles on the path system: because it will be easier for citizens to report violators. The vehicles must be used in their low speed mode, meaning they will travel no more than 15 mph. Bill Wood, a representative for Global Electric Motorcars, told council at its meeting last week that one of the proposed bills would allow those who purchased a GEM car before Jan. 1 to receive the substantial tax credit offered by the state for low emission vehicles. Another proposed bill would allow the low emission vehicles to receive full-fledged motor vehicle tags as long as they meet all federal safety requirements for low speed vehicles. GEM cars, for example, have seat belts, turn signals and other safety features not found on normal golf carts.
