Design changes could be coming from DOT for Ga. Highway 54 widening

Peachtree City officials are trying to get the Georgia Department of Transportation to tweak its design for the widening of Ga. Highway 54 West from the intersection of Hwy. 74 to the Coweta County line.

The four-lane widening includes a grassy median that could be used in the future should the need arise to expand to six lanes. Currently, however, that median is depressed.

City officials want DOT to raise the median so it can be attractively landscaped.

To create the funds for that, the city is suggesting that DOT scrap the sidewalks it has in the current design of the highway expansion since the cart path system serves approximately the same purpose: moving pedestrians.

In a recent meeting of the overlay district committee, Brown said he felt DOT officials were receptive to the changes.

City Planner David Rast told the committee that DOT officials have suggested alternate plans to route Huddleston Road under the highway to connect to an access road that would serve the commercial development in the area and eventually link up with MacDuff Parkway. The DOT has also suggested eliminating the proposed signal for Line Creek Parkway.
