Library committee causing consternation at commission

A newly formed library committee has caused one Coweta County commissioner to change his vote from a previous meeting.

During a County Commission meeting last month, Chairman Jim McGuffey appointed members from the Grantville Library, the Senoia Library and the Newnan-Coweta County Library to the committee that will work on plans and a building site for the county's new library.

The commission voted unanimously on McGuffey's appointments, and it was thought the issue was settled.

But Tuesday morning, Commissioner Lawrence Nelms asked that his vote be changed to oppose the appointments before the minutes of last month's meeting were approved.

Nelms said he had a problem with the appointments, since all of the appointees were either in McGuffey's district or Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter's district.

"There's no representation from the third, fourth or fifth districts. The library will probably be built in the fourth district, near Thomas Crossroads," he said.

But McGuffey said he appointed the members because they were all members of the county's library community, and he was not looking at district lines.

"I'm not going to change my appointments," he said.

Nelms argued that most committees have representatives from each of the five commission districts, but McGuffey stuck to his guns and refused to change his mind.

Hunter added that any recommendation from the committee would be brought before the commission, where all commissioners could voice their opinion on decisions.
