City wants traffic relief at Rockaway Road intersection

One of the biggest challenges facing many Senoia commuters is the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 and Rockaway Road.

Each morning, hundreds try to turn left on Hwy. 74 to reach their jobs in Peachtree City or head to Atlanta via Interstate 85.

Without a traffic light at the busy intersection, commuters can often wait several minutes for a shot at getting on the state highway.

During Monday night's Senoia City Council meeting, Mayor Dianne Cleveland and Councilman Bill Wood said the intersection needs to be addressed quickly.

Wood said there have been 40 accidents and 15 injuries at the intersection from 1998 to 2001.

Cleveland said she had already drafted a letter to Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown asking for his help in trying to convince the state Department of Transportation to put a traffic control device at the intersection.

In addition to Brown, Wood said he would also ask the city's legislators to get involved in talks with DOT. The road is not slated to be widened until 2009, but Cleveland said the city cannot wait that long for relief.
