And the winner is... Lottie Abbott was the winner of the 2002 Ms. Southland Beauty Pageant. Born in 1930 in Kentucky, she was married for 33 years, marrying at the young age of 19. She worked as a secretary. Abbott has been a resident of Southland for a little over eight years. Ms. Abbott has two children, Glenda and Jean, and one granddaughter, Ashley. Ashley encouraged her grandmother to enter the contest and was there to support her through the nerve-wracking event. Abbott says that her best accomplishment was "raising her wonderful daughters." She finds much joy in God and having the support of her family. She has traveled to many places, including Hawaii and Japan. Since becoming a resident of Southland a little over eight years ago, Abbott has been very involved. Debbie Azzarelli, Southland Activities, said, "Ms. Abbott is involved in everything. She loves being around people." Ms. Abbott writes articles for the Southland Newsletter, participates in arts and crafts, most special events, parties, Pokeno and Bible study. She has been president of the resident council for the past seven years. This was Abbott's second time as a contestant in the pageant, but she has always been part of the event, giving the introduction or the prayer. Her hobbies include reading and watching television. Abbott expressed surprise at being picked Ms. Southland, "I was delighted to win although any of the others could have won. They were all so lovely and wonderful. Everyone looked so beautiful." Ms. Abbott may be chosen to go onto to represent Southland in the state contest. Hundreds of local winners from across the state are entered, but only 22 are chosen to participate. We'll be watching Ms. Abbott and hoping she is selected!
