Fayette County High student named Presidential Scholar candidate A Fayette student is a candidate for one of the highest honors that can be given to a graduating senior. Jennifer Aust, a senior at Fayette County High School, has been named one of more than 2,600 candidates for the 2002 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students who are expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2002. Now in its 39th year, the Presidential Scholars Program selects students on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. The 2,600 candidates selected for possible inclusion in this year's program were chosen for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment. Further consideration was based on students' essay, self-assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations and school transcripts. A distinguished panel of educators will review each candidate's submission and select 500 semifinalists in early August. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of some 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President of the United States, will make the final selection of the scholars. They will select one male and female student from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. students living abroad as well as 15 students at-large and up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May. If Aust is chosen for the 2002 program, she will be the second student from the Fayette County School System to be named a Presidential Scholar. Last year, Chad M. Troop of Starr's Mill High School became the school system's first scholar. Scholars are invited to Washington, D.C. for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in activities with their elected representatives, educators and others in public life. Aust is the daughter of Tomie R. and Dr. Catherine C. Aust of Fayetteville.
