Grow beautiful roses

Local rose society cosponsoring Home Depot seminars

Everything will be coming up roses as the American Rose Society and Home Depot join ranks to help America's gardeners grow and enjoy roses. This year has been designated as the Year of the Rose. The rose is our national floral emblem.

The South Metro Rose Society will be hosting rose seminars Saturday, Mar. 16, at 10 a.m. at Home Depot stores in Fayetteville, McDonough and Newnan.

The "How to Grow Beautiful Roses" seminars are designed to help gardeners grow roses easily and successfully. Seminar leaders will illustrate the many types of roses available for beautifying the landscape, and will make gardeners aware of the newest methods and products available to help their roses thrive. Topics to be covered in the hour-long seminars include bed preparation, planting, watering, fertilization, disease prevention, pruning and winterization.

Seminars will be led by members of the American Rose Society's corps of Consulting Rosarians. This nationwide network of volunteers has been trained to assist rose growers with all aspects of the hobby. Whether working with novices or experienced rose gardeners, the ARS Consulting Rosarians can offer the help and advice that makes rose growing a successful and rewarding experience.

This Home Depot-American Rose Society partnership comes naturally for one of the largest retail suppliers of roses in the United States and the 110-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the love of America's national floral emblem, the rose. The seminars are being offered as part of the American Rose Society's yearlong event "The Year of the Rose 2002," which is being celebrated in every state, and by rose societies around the world; by rose growers, the rose industry, florists, cities, public gardens and other organizations; and in hundreds of events around the country.
