PTC Council says no to pooper scooper law for path system, roads

Deciding it wasn't worthwhile, the Peachtree City Council has declined to enact an ordinance requiring pet owners to clean up after their pets' excrement on the city's cart paths, streets and sidewalks.

Randy Gaddo, the city's director of leisure services, pointed out that there weren't many options to pursue violators of the ordinance.

"It could pit citizen versus citizen and take up valuable court time," Gaddo said.

Council decided to drop the idea after they learned that most of the complaints received at City Hall were from homeowners finding pet remains in their yard. The news drew a small amount of applause from the assembled crowd.

"This was not generated by us on council or staff," noted council member Annie McMenamin. "It's based on complaints from citizens."

"The complaints we get are mainly for private property," said City Manager Jim Basinger. "We do not have a problem as far as the cart paths and streets are concerned."

Several months ago, council enacted a similar ordinance for the city's athletic fields and recreation areas after complaints that children were coming into contact with animal excrement while they played.
