Landscape plan for Wal-Mart, Home Depot gets high marks

The landscape plan for Peachtree City's Wal-Mart Supercenter and Home Depot was scrutinized by the Peachtree City Planning Commission at its regular meeting Thursday night.

Commission chairman Wes Saunders and Developmental Services Director Jim Williams said the plan looks substantial.

"I think your plan's fantastic," Williams said, noting that over time the gigantic retail development could become one of the nicest commercial sites in the city. Both stores combined will encompass over 300,000 sq. ft.

Bill Lincicome, who presented the plan to the commission, pointed out that the plan calls for more trees than the city's landscape ordinance requires. He also said Home Depot and Wal-Mart will guarantee that the landscaping is viable for two years, instead of the typical one year other developers have agreed to recently.

All the landscaping will be irrigated, including trees, Lincicome noted.

The only chink in the plan's armor could be the view of the site from Ga. Highway 74, Williams noted.

"The first view of it you get is from Highway 74, so it needs to be special," Williams said.

Lincicome said he would work on beefing up the landscaping in that area. He also said that the total impervious surface on the site is at 69.2 percent, under the city's maximum of 75 percent.

Lincicome also presented details about the drainage system developed for the property.

The commission took no official action on the plan since it was handled in a workshop. Company officials hope to make a few more changes and submit the plan for possible approval at the next commission meeting.
