Local student to spread word about literacy Fayette County student Martha Manzo was recently named Advanced English Language Program Literacy Ambassador for Georgia at the ninth annual EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgians in Literacy Education) awards banquet in Atlanta. Manzo won the district level competition at Griffin Technical college in September, then the West Central Georgia competition in October before advancing to the state level competition Jan. 24. A maximum of 42 students can advance to the state level. The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education through its office of adult literacy sponsors the annual EAGLE awards program. The program is designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities available in local communities across the state. Manzo, along with six other newly named ambassadors, will travel Georgia promoting the adult literacy program during 2002. After that, they'll be inducted into the Adult Literacy Ambassador's Circle, whose members meet twice a year to plan community and statewide literacy activities. Manzo is a student in the English language program offered in Fayette County and sponsored by Griffin Technical College. Her nominating instructor is Nancy Ricker. The native Colombian moved to Senoia, Ga., two years ago and immediately enrolled in English classes. After having studied the language, she has reentered her career field of banking at Peachtree National Bank. She said she feels it is important for people from other countries to learn English as soon as possible so they can become involved and integrated into the community. EAGLE competition is open to students in state and federally funded adult literacy programs. Free public adult literacy classes offering basic skills education, GED preparation and English language classes are available in every county in Georgia.
