Fayette teacher recruitment takes on a new look

The Fayette County School System rolls out a new marketing tool as it gears up to recruit teachers for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Instead of burdening prospective candidates with mounds of brochures and paperwork describing the school system, its academic programs and the Fayette community, interviewees will be given a three by three-inch CD which they can use with their personal computers to research areas that interest them as possible employees. The interactive CD includes video of student, parent, teacher and business partner testimonials about Fayette's quality educational program as well as shots of actual classroom instruction.

Specific areas of interest are presented in five categories: students, schools, teacher support, community and Fayette living. Within each category, viewers have the option to click on links that will take them to specific pages on the Fayette County Board of Education Web site (www.fcboe.org) to learn more about a particular area. At any time during the viewing of the CD, prospective candidates can click on a link that will allow them to apply for a job online.

"The greatest aspect of the CD is that it will never become outdated. Since facts and figures are obtained by clicking on links that go directly to our Web site, we can update the information as often as needed so that viewers are receiving the most accurate data possible," said human resources executive director Judy Byrd.

Job candidates attending the school system's first local job fair of the year Feb. 22 at the LaFayette Educational Center will be among the initial group of prospective teachers to receive the new CD. While teachers in all disciplines are being sought through the fair, the Fayette School System has identified several critical areas where teachers are needed most: mathematics, science, special education, middle grades mathematics and middle grades science.

In an effort to help recruit teachers in these critical areas, a $1,000 signing bonus is being offered.

Additionally, current teachers can also benefit by helping to recruit teachers. Any certified staff member, other than an administrator, who recruits an applicant signing a contract in Fayette County will earn an extra day of personal leave during the 2002-2003 academic year.

Two additional local job fairs are scheduled for March 22 and April 19 at the LaFayette Educational Center. Individuals interested in applying for various teaching positions with the school system are being asked to submit an application for employment and to call the Human Resources Department, 770-460-3535 to schedule an interview appointment for one of the job fair dates.

Additional information about the school system, salary, benefits, test scores and community may be obtained on the Web site or by calling the Human Resources Department.
