Fayetteville looking at water discounts for seniors

A few hundred Fayetteville residents may soon be saving more money on their water and sewer service.

The City Council is considering an amendment to the water and sewer ordinance that would provide a 15 percent discount for all senior customers (age 65 and older). A public hearing and first reading on the measure was held at Thursday night's council meeting, and it expected to be considered for a second reading at the Mar. 7 meeting.

The current senior discount is a $9 minimum charge for water and $9 minimum for sewer for the first 3,000 gallons. Regular rates are $12 for water and $10 for sewer for the same usage. After 3,000 gallons, the standard per-thousand-gallon rate then applies.

The existing senior discount is now being applied to 78 customer accounts, but if the proposed changes are approved, that number would jump to 488 accounts. That would create a decrease in water and sewer revenue of just over $15,000.

Staff has been evaluating discount rate policies for seniors in water and sewer as well as sanitation since the annual council retreat last fall.
