Local youths take on engineering challenge

Nathan Young and Rob Fine of Fayetteville have been conducting experiments in artificial intelligence and designing robots as part of the first-ever honors program in Mercer University's School of Engineering.

Young and Fine, both Mercer freshmen and 2001 graduates of Starr's Mill High School, are among 20 students participating in the program.

The program is designed to allow exceptional students to pursue advanced engineering studies and make practical application of engineering theory through challenging projects such as building and programming robots.

Mercer's School of Engineering is ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report and has a reputation for academic excellence. It is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Founded in 1833 in Penfield, Ga., Mercer is the only independent university of its size in the country to offer programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, medicine, pharmacy, law, theology and nursing.

With more than 7,300 students and 400 faculty on campuses in Macon and Atlanta, the university is one of the largest Baptist-affiliated institutions in the world. It has been ranked among the leading colleges and universities in the South by U.S. News for 12 consecutive years.
