Open house Saturday for new fire station in north Fayette County

The public is invited to visit Fayette County's newest fire station at an open house Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

The new station number one is at 450 Ga. Hwy. 279, near the intersection of Helmer Road.

The station was moved from its former location on Ga. Hwy. 314 because it was deemed a potential flood hazard due to its proximity to a dam. The station was relocated in a different area to be more centrally located for the zone it serves, which will improve response times, according to fire officials.

An emergency grant from the federal government paid for 75 percent of the $590,000 cost to build station one.
