Funeral homes reassure callers: 'It's OK' From Staff Reports
Local residents may wonder whether there's any chance their loved ones' ashes may not be the real thing, in light of events in north Georgia. Searchers expect to find more than 200 bodies in the macabre case in Walker County, Ga., in which a crematory operator is charged with defrauding grieving families by taking money to cremate their relatives, but stashing the bodies instead. Those who have used local funeral homes have nothing to worry about, said David Mowell of Carl J. Mowell and Son Funeral Home. His office had fielded 61 calls from concerned relatives as of Tuesday, Mowell said. He reassured his customers the firm uses Professional Cremation Service in Austell, a business he has trust in. Mowell said he assures everyone that Mowell has never been affiliated with the crematory in Walker County that is under investigation. "I have the utmost confidence in the people we're working with and the service they've given," Mowell said. A spokesman for Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City said the company performs its own cremations on site. As for the proprietor of the crematory in Walker County, Mowell said incidents like this are "a disgrace ... it's a stain on our profession."
