School system begins SPLOST push By JOHN
THOMPSON
With just over a month to go until the election, the Coweta County School System Tuesday laid out the rules for communicating on SPLOST. Last year, the school system saw its efforts to extend the tax past June 2001 go up in flames. This year, the system has already courted the seniors by also having an exemption for seniors on some of the school tax also on the ballot in March. Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks told the board members that information on the SPLOST proposal would be circulated by public information officer Dean Jackson to the various schools this week. Brooks said the information was just that; it doesn't provide an opinion on how the voters should vote. He also cautioned school system employees from offering an opinion on the proposal, unless it was done after work hours. After getting the information, Brooks said the employees could contact Jackson or their respective principals if they had any other questions. Board member Allan Payton also asked the board to consider adding an exemption for disabled people to the ballot. While it's too late to get on the March ballot, Payton said the exemption could be voted on during November's general election. Payton said there's about 100 residents in the county who would qualify for an exemption and it would not cost the school system much money in lost revenues. The board agreed to study Payton's proposal and report back to the superintendent.
