Winter Guard Classic is next week East Coweta High School, in cooperation with the East Coweta High School Band Boosters, will host the second annual Indian Winter Guard Classic. The competition will be at the East Coweta High School Gymnasium Feb. 16 and 17. Festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Twenty-eight Winter Guards from Georgia and Alabama will compete. Winter Guard takes all the artistry of the outdoor marching band and sets it indoors. Each unit uses flags, sabres, rifles, dance and props to perform a show to taped music. The music each guard uses may vary from classical, jazz, to rock 'n' roll. Because the setting is in the gymnasium, the guard members have the opportunity to maximize the audience's involvement. During most performances, it is common for the audience to be on their feet well before the standard eight-minute performance has ended. The guards are categorized into different classes with the main distinction being that units are either scholastic or independent. This year's event will feature guards that have acquired awards in regional and national competitions. Pope High School from Marietta, Ga., Collins High School from Suwanee, Ga., and Marietta High School from Marietta have all been honored as regional and national finalists. Several guards from Coweta County also will participate. East Coweta High School's varsity and junior varsity teams will compete as well as Newnan High School and Northgate High School. Tickets for both events may be purchased at the East Coweta High School gymnasium immediately preceding both Saturday and Sunday's performances. Admission is $5 for one day and $8 for two-day passes. For information phone the East Coweta High music department at 770-254-2856.
