Barnes dedicates Central Education Center

Georgia Governor Roy Barnes last week praised Coweta's Central Educational Center as the model for seamless education and an example of how to "tear down" the divisions between public schools, technical colleges, universities and business community in Georgia.

Barnes was the keynote speaker during the CEC dedication ceremony. A crowd of about 300 Cowetans attended the dedication, which came one and a half years after Barnes led a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the school.

Barnes was joined at the ceremony's podium by Dr. Kenneth Breeden, commissioner of the Department of Technical and Adult Education, Rep. Lynn Smith, Coweta County Schools Superintendent Richard Brooks, Coweta County school board Chairman Bill Covington, school board member Mike Sumner, Central Board of Directors (charter school board) Chairman Steve Stripling, and Central Educational Center CEO Mark Whitlock.

Students Kyle Libby of East Coweta High School, Jessica Jackson of Newnan High School, and Toby Hughes, CEC and Newnan High School graduate, spoke about why they attended the Central Educational Center and what it has done for them.

Barnes left CEC to attend a ceremony at Drew Charter School in DeKalb County, to make a major policy announcement on charter schools.

The governor said he is introducing new charter school legislation in order "to create more Central Educational Centers" in Georgia.
