Essay contest open to sixth grade students
For the third year, the Georgia Municipal Association is asking Georgia's sixth grade students what they would do if they were mayors. The "If I Were Mayor, I Would ..." contest gives students the opportunity to share their visions of what their community would be like under their guidance. Both public and private school students can participate, including home-schooled students, and the deadline for submitting an essay is March 8. Eleven winners will be chosen statewide, with one overall winner selected from that group. Each winner receives a $250 savings bond and other prizes. Essays must be no longer than 250 words and begin with the phrase, "If I were mayor, I would ..." A panel of educators/city officials will judge the essays on creativity, proper use of grammar, sincerity of thought and clarity. Rules and entry forms are available on the GMA Web site, www.gmanet.com, or phone Amy Henderson at 678-686-6226.
