Local youth still being recognized for letter to president

A Fayette student continues to receive recognition for his letter to President George W. Bush following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Fayette County Board of Education Monday honored Ashton Henderson, the 11-year-old Booth Middle School student whose letter was published in the National Journal, a Washington insiders' news magazine.

Commendation from the board follows on the heels of a resolution honoring Henderson authored by Sen. Mitch Seabaugh and approved by the state Senate. The resolution honors the youth as "an outstanding citizen" and commends him for "his patriotism and strong commitment to American ideals."

"I'm not afraid I will die for my country, I will do anything it takes for justice," said Henderson in the letter to the president.

"I live in the best country in the world," he said.

Henderson also wrote that he felt "really sad," and "really mad" because so many people were killed who did nothing wrong.
