100 days and counting: Fayette students celebrate important date
Fayette Students have just passed an important milestone, the 100th day of school. Kindergarten and first grade students at Brooks and North Fayette elementary schools marked the event Jan. 23 in a big way by participating in games and activities that involved the number 100. Most activities at both schools required students to either count to 100 or measure the length or weight of 100 objects. In order to help the younger students understand how to participate in the various activities, they were paired with fourth and fifth grade students who took on the role of teacher. "Our fourth graders are helping out today because the fifth grade is involved in testing," said Judy Chambers, instructional lead math teacher who was assisting with the celebration at Brooks. "These kids are just having a blast helping the younger ones. They seem to be having as much fun as I am." One of the most popular activities at both schools was the Fruit Loop necklace. Students had to count and place 100 pieces of the cereal onto a string to make the necklace. After the jewelry was complete, they got to eat their creations. Students at North Fayette enjoyed participating in a new activity this year called 100 shoes. Kindergarten teacher Priscilla Thomas collected 100 pair of adult and children's shoes. The object of the game was to sort and match the shoes by various elements such as color, size and heels. According to Thomas, the purpose of the 100th day celebration is two-fold. The younger children receive reinforcement instruction in counting while the older students get an opportunity to practice their leadership skills by helping their schoolmates participate in the activities. "This celebration is always a big hit with the younger and older students alike," Thomas said. "Students always remember the 100th day celebration if they don't remember anything else."
