Fayette youth to compete in national dog show
James Allen of Fayetteville will travel to New York City next week to compete in the 126th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The ninth grade home-schooled student is the son ofDon and Susanne Allen. He won a sponsorship to attend Westminster from The American Shetland Sheepdog Association. The sponsorship is awarded based on performance in the national rankings. They award two per year. The terms of the sponsorship require that Allen write a report to be published in the ASSA Bulletin Board on the Westminster experience. He will travel by van with his parents and four siblings. His parents have educational side trips planned for Baltimore and Washington. Allen finished the year with a total of 10 first place wins and five Best Junior Handler awards. He was ranked fourth in Shelties and 12th in Herding in the December issue of Junior News and Views Newsletter. According to friends and family, Allen is being taught that participation in the sport of dogs requires one to give back to the community in some way to counteract the tide of animals produced by irresponsible breeding. To that end, he assists with the maintenance of the Fayette County Humane Society's Web site found at http://www.fayettehumane.org. He helps to crop and resize photos of available animals which are taken each week at the shelter by the Humane Society's Laurie Klonoski.
