A hero is honored at Whitewater Middle

There is no age minimum when it comes to being a hero.

Whitewater Middle School recently honored one of its students for his heroic efforts under the most adverse of circumstances.

Nov. 29, 2001, at approximately 8:05 p.m., Cheryl Jackson and her son Nick, an eighth grade student at the school, were driving south on Ga. Highway 85 when Jackson began choking and was assisted by her son.

Nick carefully pulled the vehicle off the highway to avoid colliding with another car and causing harm to others. Paramedics were called and transported Jackson to Fayette Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Cardiac failure was determined to be the cause of Jackson's death. She was just one month away from celebrating her 41st birthday in December.

Faculty and staff at the school are proud of Nick's efforts and felt he deserved to be commended for his ability to stay calm and do what was necessary to prevent injury to himself and others during a time of personal crisis.

Nick was presented a certificate at Whitewater Middle recently in recognition of his courage, moral strength and exemplary performance under adverse conditions. Whitewater's school resource officer, Sgt. Tommy Pope, Principal Sandra Kidd and assistant Principal Jason Byars presented the certificate to Nick in the presence of his father, Howard, older brother, Derek, and teachers and classmates.

Cheryl Jackson's family would like to stress to all women of Fayette County the importance of being checked for heart disease. Jackson's death was found to have been caused by blocked arteries. She experienced no symptoms prior to her death.
