Herndon story to be featured at PTC library for black history month The Peachtree City Library has several activities planned for February in honor of Black History Month. Atlanta storyteller Akbar Imhotep, famous for his "Uncle Remus" tales and African folklore, returns to the library for a presentation to initiate the library's celebration Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. Children and adults are invited to attend. Storyteller Josie Bailey will entertain children ages 3-8 in a special program Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Carole Merritt will lecture about Alonzo Herndon's rise to the top as a black businessman Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. Born a slave, Herndon became a barber and later founded one of the first insurance companies that would insure blacks. At his death in 1927, Atlanta Life Insurance Company had assets of over $1 million. Tenor Herb Corbin will open the program with the saga of the slavery experience in music. Each event will be held at the library's downstairs public meeting area. Herndon will also be the subject of a month-long display at the library which will present an exhibit of photographs from his home, a 1910 Beaux Arts Classical mansion located in Atlanta. It is one of eight National Historic Landmarks in Atlanta.
