PTC gets grant to purchase Drake Field By JOHN
MUNFORD
Peachtree City has been approved for a $241,000 grant to protect greenspace through the purchase of the Drake Field area between City Hall and Lake Peachtree. The 10.26-acre tract, which has been purchased from Pathway Communities, was actually zoned commercial and at one time there were plans to locate a restaurant there, according to city officials. Pathway officials have allowed citizens to use the land as a park for years which may have led to misconceptions that the city actually owned the property. Drake Field is a popular spot for those attending the city's annual July 4th fireworks display. The grant funds, slated for fiscal year 2002, will come from the Georgia Community Greenspace program, which was heavily supported last year by Gov. Roy Barnes. The program was designed to protect open space in some of the state's fastest-growing areas through the purchase of land. The property was purchased for $1.25 million by the Peachtree City Development Authority, which will eventually sell the property to the city. City officials hope to get more funds in the following fiscal year to offset the purchase price of Drake Field.
