Planner doesn't want warehouses on highway

If Coweta County planner Robert Tolleson has anything to do with it, the County Commission will not allow the spread of mini-warehouses on Ga. Highway 34 west.

The commission will conduct a public hearing Tuesday morning on a rezoning request from Synergy Investment Group. The group wants 11 acres rezoned on the state highway from rural reserve to C-8, heavy commercial.

Synergy wants to build 14 mini-warehouses on the site, with a total of 80,000 square feet.

In his report to the commission, Tolleson urges the board to deny the application for two reasons.

First, Tolleson said heavy commercial is not conducive with the surrounding neighborhood.

"Associated with the proposed use is warehousing and outside storage of materials. This activity is unrelated and incompatible with other land uses nearby and most likely would change the business character of the area," he said.

Second, heavy commercial is not compatible with the Future Land Use Map, which calls for more offices or light industry in the area.

Another interesting item on Tuesday's agenda is a discussion of the county's sign ordinance. Commissioner Leigh Schlumper has argued the ordinance needs to be tightened to prevent the "visual clutter" she sees on Ga. Highway 34 east.

The meeting starts at 9 p.m. at the County Administrative Complex on Perry Street in Newnan.
