Fayette science teacher gets district honor The Georgia Science Teachers Association has selected Karen Mizell of Flat Rock Middle School as the 2002 Middle School Science Teacher of the Year for its 5th District. Mizell teachers sixth grade science and says the best part of teaching sixth grade is being part of her students' first lab experiences. Her interests include NASCAR and IRL car racing as well as spending time with her husband and children. Each year GSTA recognizes excellence in science teaching through the awards and recognition program. The Science Teacher of the Year award recognizes ongoing excellence in the teaching of science and commitment to its improvement. Outstanding achievement in elementary, middle and high school science teaching is recognized with selection of the district winner from each of the 12 GSTA districts. The teachers will be honored at a special awards banquet Feb. 13 at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.
