Youths get taste of politics Twelve high school students who will advise the Fulton County Board of Commissioners about youth issues in 2002 will be sworn in during the board's 10 a.m. meeting Jan. 16. They will recite a special oath administered by Commissioner Nancy A. Boxill. They are the Fulton County Youth Commission, whose members are selected each year in a competitive process that includes applications, a speech and interviews. This year's young "politicians" have held public hearings in each commission district to identify key issues to be presented to the board for consideration and possible action. Boxill cofounded the Youth Commission in 1999. The students assigned to represent each of the county's five geographic districts, are: District 3 and 4 (North Fulton County, Sandy Springs, North Atlanta) Jarrett Horne, North Atlanta High School, 12th grade; Meghan Smithgall, Westminster High School, 12th grade; Nicole Tague, Westminster, 12th grade. District 6 (Central and East Atlanta) Leon Milne, Riverwood High School, ninth grade; Matthew I. Patterson, George Washington Carver High School, 11th grade; Courtney Simmons, Westminster High School, 12th grade. Simmons was a youth commissioner in 2001.
