Fed up with ongoing complaints from citizens about problems with cable television from AT&T Broadband, Peachtree City officials have executed a stop work order on the company to halt all its work in the city.

Company representatives are scheduled to meet with city officials Thursday to talk about the problems, said city public information officer Betsy Tyler.

Tyler said Monday that some customer complaints can't be handled through the company's phone system. She said the city wants a customer service representative stationed at the local cable office "with a published phone number."

Citizens who aren't getting answers from the cable company are calling City Hall to complain, Tyler noted. The complaints about cable service reached 100 in December, with about 25 so far this month, she said.

In contrast, there were just 40 complaints to City Hall for all of 2000, Tyler noted.

"The complaints have just been horrendous," Tyler said, noting that many of the complaints involved reception problems after the upgrade. "They're having to replace more cable than they thought they would."

Although the city was informed that the cable upgrade was complete Dec. 21, crews were replacing underground cable until Friday, when the stop work order was issued, Tyler said.

Mayor Steve Brown authorized the stop work order, Tyler noted.

AT&T officials will meet with the city Thursday at the city's request to resolve some of the city's concerns, Tyler said.

The city also wants a letter from AT&T stating that it will reestablish the grass on city rights of way, because the areas can't be reseeded now due to weather, Tyler said.
