TDK Components in PTC cutting production, eliminating 100 jobs By JOHN
MUNFORD
TDK Components USA in Peachtree City plans to cut its work force by almost one-third as part of a restructuring plan that will eliminate an entire production line and streamline another. The company expects to cut approximately 100 jobs as it eliminates production of inductors. That will leave around 230 jobs at the plant for producing chip capacitors. TCU's production of inductors has been scaled down significantly while the company plans to halt all inductor production by March 15. The company is already working on reducing costs and inventory levels for its chip capacitor operation The moves were in response to a "significant drop-off in customer demand brought about by the current economic slowdown," according to TCU officials. TCU President Kaneo Miura said the company will offer a severance package to all affected employees which will include continued medical benefits for a certain length of time. "Unfortunately, the severe economic situation that we now face has forced us to make the very difficult decision to eliminate nearly one-third of our workforce," Miura said. "Such action cannot be taken without a profound sense of loss. We are confident, however, that those of our employees affected by the job losses will prove to be valuable contributors to their new employers." The reduction comes on the heels of TCU dropping its production of VHS tapes and computer CDs last year. Miura noted that the company has enjoyed a "very close and cooperative relationship" with the community in its 16 years of business. TCU will invite prospective employers to a job fair to showcase TCU employees seeking new jobs, Miura said. The company will also hold employee workshops on resume preparation and successful job interviewing skills.
