Clayton State sets first-ever 'music homecoming'

The Clayton College & State University music department is offering the first in what is planned as an annual series of music homecoming recitals and receptions Friday, Jan. 18.

In addition, a special master class that will discuss the effect of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the arts will be conducted by the university's returning alumni artists Thursday, Jan. 17.

Alumni of Clayton Junior College, Clayton State College and Clayton College & State University are invited to the Jan. 18 event, which begins at 8:15 p.m., in the university's world-famous Spivey Hall. Several former music faculty members also will attend the event, and former Clayton State faculty members also are invited.

Following a welcome by Clayton State President Dr. Thomas K. Harden, the recital will feature six of the music department's returning young artists in an all-British program: Wendy Baker, soprano; Holly Chatham, piano; Mitch Gindlesperger, bass; David Schnell, tenor; Holly McCarren, mezzo-soprano; and Tami Petty, mezzo-soprano. Also featured will be performances by faculty artists, Dr. William Graves on guitar and William Hearn on saxophone.

Many of the featured young artists who will perform in the Jan. 18 concert will conduct a special Jan. 17 master class that will discuss, among other things, the effects of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the arts. The class, for interested Clayton State faculty, students and alumni, will be in room 157 of the university's Music Building, from noon to 1 p.m.

Several of the young alumni artists present are residents of New York City and will have much to say about the life of a young artist in New York as well as how the events of Sept. 11 have affected and continue to affect their lives.

The recital event is free and open to the public thanks to the support of the university's Lyceum program.

Although Clayton State is best known for serving the residents of Atlanta's Southern Crescent, the university's alumni are currently spread out over at least 100 of Georgia's 158 counties. The top 10 counties represented in the University's 9,000+ alumni database are: Clayton (1924), Henry (1831), Fayette (1029), Fulton (803), Coweta (527), DeKalb (315), Gwinnett (255), Cobb (242), Rockdale (235) and Spalding (168).
