FCEF accepting applications for teacher mini-grants

The Fayette County Education Foundation is gearing up to award its first teacher mini-grants later this year.

The foundation, which was incorporated in 2001 as a nonprofit Georgia corporation, seeks to provide monetary assistance to Fayette County School System teachers whose innovative classroom ideas and projects might otherwise not be able to be implemented due to a lack of funding. Both the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the school system support the FCEF.

"The board of directors is very excited about beginning the mini-grant process. We have been working hard for over a year to get organized and to start collecting money to fund these grants," said Rick Lindsey, secretary of the FCEF board of directors. "This, however, is only the beginning. With continued hard work and community support, the foundation will be able to assist teachers, students, and the entire school system in keeping Fayette County schools the best in the state."

Programs that are funded by the foundation supplement the existing curriculum of the school system. The FCEF is placing special emphasis on grant requests that involve reading/literacy and technology since these skills are critical to a student's success both academically and professionally. The foundation is also awarding general academic mini-grants for unique projects in other areas of study within the school system.

The grants will be awarded in the range of $200-500. There are specific standards and a timeline that funded programs must meet. All grant requests must support a goal of the school from which the request is being made.

Grantees are required to submit a formal report to the foundation describing how the funds were used and the benefit that resulted from the funded project. Grants are competitive and the number awarded will be determined by the requests that are made. Funding for the grants is provided by monetary donations that have been made to the foundation by local businesses, school system employees and friends.

Applications for mini-grant requests will be available at each school in January. All applications must be submitted to the FCEF by Feb. 28 to be considered. Grant awards will be made in May.

A board of directors made up of community leaders and school system administrators oversees the operation of the foundation.
