Fayetteville seeks new P&Z commissioner

Fayetteville is looking to fill a vacancy on its Planning and Zoning Commission.

Al Lipscomb, whose term expires at the beginning of the year, decided not to continue on the commission. City officials are soliciting applications from interested residents and hope to fill the slot next month.

The six-member commission's members are confirmed by a vote of the City Council after being appointed by the mayor, although council members also make nominations. Commissioners serve two-year terms which are staggered so that three members' terms begin each year.

Allen Feldman and Kevin Bittinger, whose terms have also expired, will be continuing on the commission. Their appointments will be made official at next week's council meeting.

Applications for Lipscomb's seat are being accepted until Jan. 25 and should be directed to Mayor Kenneth Steele at City Hall. An advertisement ran in Wednesday's edition of the Fayette Daily News, the city's legal organ, but Steele received a few letters before that as word has gotten around town, City Manager Joe Morton said.

After all applications are received, an interview panel will be formed, and city officials hope to see a new commissioner confirmed at the Feb. 7 council meeting, according to Morton. That person would then attend the Atlanta Regional Commission's Planning Academy to receive a "crash course" in planning matters, Morton said.

The Planning and Zoning Commission typically meets twice a month. A work session is convened each second Tuesday, and a voting meeting follows each fourth Tuesday. Both are at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
